What Do Rubik’s Cube Symbols Mean?

Rubik’s Cube notation uses letters for the six faces: F = Front, R = Right, U = Up, L = Left, B = Back, and D = Down.

A single uppercase letter means a 90° clockwise turn, such as F, R, or U. An apostrophe ' means a 90° counterclockwise turn, such as F', R', or U'. A 2 means a 180° double turn, such as F2, R2, or U2.

How to Share a Cube Solution

After solving your cube, you can export a PDF guide and send it to a friend. This is useful for printing or offline use, but PDF files may be large for long solutions or big cubes.

For a smaller file, export the cube state as JSON. Your friend can use the Load button to import the JSON file, restore the cube state, watch the solution animation, and export a PDF later if needed.

How to Solve a 3x3 Rubik’s Cube: Beginner’s Method

If you are new to cubing, the easiest way to solve a 3x3 Rubik’s Cube is the layer-by-layer method. You solve the first layer, then the middle layer, and finally the last layer.

This guide is written for beginners who want clear steps, simple goals, and easy-to-follow algorithms.

Tip: Keep the same color on the bottom while solving the first two layers. Many beginners choose white as the bottom color.

Step 1: Make the Bottom Cross

Start by solving the cross on the bottom layer. Your goal is not only to place four edge pieces around the bottom center, but also to make sure the side colors match the center pieces on each side.

For example, if you are solving the white cross, each white edge should connect to the correct side center color. This is the foundation of the entire solve, so take your time here.

Step 1: Make the bottom cross

Step 2: Solve the Bottom Corners

Next, insert the four corner pieces into the bottom layer. Each corner has three colors, so make sure all three stickers match the surrounding center colors.

After this step, the entire first layer should be solved.

Step 2: Solve the bottom corners

Step 3: Solve the Middle Layer Edges

Now look for edge pieces in the top layer that do not contain the top color. These edges belong in the middle layer.

Match the front color of the edge with the same-colored center, then use the correct algorithm depending on where the edge needs to go.

Case 1: Insert the edge into one side

Step 3, Case 1: Insert the edge into one side

Use this algorithm:

F U F U F U' F' U' F'

Step 3, Case 1 algorithm

Case 2: Insert the edge into the other side

Step 3, Case 2: Insert the edge into the other side

Use this algorithm:

R' U' R' U' R' U R U R

Step 3, Case 2 algorithm

Case 3: Edge is stuck in the wrong middle-layer slot

Step 3, Case 3: Edge in the wrong middle-layer slot

If an edge is already in the middle layer but in the wrong place or flipped the wrong way, use this algorithm to take it out and try again:

R U2 R' U R U2 R' U F' U' F

Step 3, Case 3 algorithm

When this step is finished, the first two layers should be complete.

Step 4: Make the Top Cross

At this point, focus only on the top color. Your goal is to create a cross on the top face.

Step 4: Make the top cross

You may see a dot, an L-shape, a line, or already have a cross. Use the same algorithm until the top cross is formed:

F R U R' U' F'

Step 4 top-cross algorithm

You may need to rotate the top face or repeat the algorithm more than once.

Step 5: Complete the Top Face

Now make the entire top face one solid color. The side colors do not need to be solved yet; focus only on getting all top stickers facing up.

Algorithm 1

Step 5, Algorithm 1 case

R' U' R U' R' U2 R

Step 5, Algorithm 1

Algorithm 2

Step 5, Algorithm 2 case

R U R' U R U2 R'

Step 5, Algorithm 2

Use the algorithm that matches your case. If the top face is not solved after one try, adjust the top layer with a U move and run the algorithm again.

Step 6: Position the Top Corners

Once the top face color is complete, the last-layer corners may still be in the wrong locations. In this step, you move the top corners to their correct positions.

Corner cycle algorithm 1

Step 6, corner cycle algorithm 1 case

R2 F2 R' B' R F2 R' B R'

Step 6, corner cycle algorithm 1

Corner cycle algorithm 2

Step 6, corner cycle algorithm 2 case

R B' R F2 R' B R F2 R2

Step 6, corner cycle algorithm 2

If no corners appear to be in the right place, run one of the algorithms once. Then check again and continue from there.

Step 7: Position the Top Edges

This is the final step. The top face should already be solved, but the last-layer edge pieces may need to be cycled around the cube.

Edge cycle algorithm 1

Step 7, edge cycle algorithm 1 case

R U' R U R U R U' R' U' R2

Step 7, edge cycle algorithm 1

Edge cycle algorithm 2

Step 7, edge cycle algorithm 2 case

L' U L' U' L' U' L' U L U L2

Step 7, edge cycle algorithm 2

Choose the algorithm that cycles the edges in the direction you need. You may need to adjust the top layer with a U move before or after the algorithm.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why Does the Solver Say My Cube Cannot Be Solved?

In most cases, the entered cube state is not physically possible. A corner may be twisted, an edge may be flipped, two pieces may be swapped, or a sticker color may have been entered incorrectly. Recheck the colors, especially corners and edges.

Can I Use My Camera to Scan the Cube?

Yes. You can scan one cube face at a time with your camera and review the detected colors before applying them.

Can I Upload Photos Instead of Using the Camera?

Yes. You can upload a photo of a cube face, crop it, detect the colors, and manually correct any mistakes.

Does It Support 2×2, 3×3 and 4×4 Cubes?

Yes. The solver supports 2×2, 3×3, 4×4 and larger NxN cubes up to 50×50.

Is This Rubik’s Cube Solver Free?

Yes. It is free to use in modern desktop and mobile browsers.

Can I Save My Progress?

Yes. Use the JSON export option to save the cube state and solution data. Later, you can import the JSON file and continue from the saved state.
